The future is looking Bright for the Breeders Crown UK & Ireland and the breeding of home bred horses in both the UK and Ireland.

Head of Equine Sales at Brightwells Auctioneers, Terry Court said “We have been selling standardbred in the UK for 27 years and have sponsored races for youngsters in the Breeders Crown for the last 3 years, and within this time we have experienced a new surge in the market due to stakes racing in this country and Ireland. People are starting to breed a better yearling, paying attention to feeding and presentation in the sales ring.

It is our intention at Brightwells to help the Breeders Crown in their endeavour to promote, support and improve breeding and racing of a better youngster and that is why we have increased our sponsorship and will be concentrating on sponsoring the Breeders Crown 2 year old colts and fillies finals which we will review with the intention of increasing this sponsorship each year provided our sales keep going in the same direction as they have been for the past 3 years.

We look forward to meeting and greeting new and present loyal customers at the Breeders Crown 2017 in our hospitality tent and hopefully see some of our 2016 graduates running and winning.”

Prize money for 2 year olds in 2017 will be in the region of £20,000 divided amongst colts and fillies over 2 days with heats and finals.

This will make the Breeders Crown UK & Ireland the richest race for homebred 2 year old colts and fillies in both the UK and Ireland in the history of the sport in both countries.

Dates are to be announced once they are confirmed by the BHRC.

Hanover and Alabar new sponsors for Ireland’s VDM

“Alan Galloway, owner and director of Alabar Stud, was in Ireland for the VDM Weekend this past August and was infatuated with everything he saw.
“It was my first time in Ireland for the VDM,” said Galloway, “And what a show they put on. Just a fantastic race weekend. So much excitement. So much passion for the sport that I knew Alabar had to get involved again.

“We actually were sponsors when the first Breeders Crown UK & Ireland came about over ten years ago.” Galloway said. “We were invited to come over and help them and the Ireland improve racing. I met and worked with its president, David Wilson, when he first developed the Breeders Crown series.
We bred over 100 mares back then,” Galloway said. “We sent over Village Jasper, Armbro Operative and Safely Kept. It was very difficult getting all the approvals from the government but we got it done. Many of the horses racing there now are from their offspring’s.

“I was really taken back this year,” Galloway said. “The Irish are such lovely people. Everything that Derek Delaney and his brother have done to promote this weekend is fantastic. Their story is very moving, so emotional, it’s what we at Alabar want to be part of.”

Rock N Roll HeavenNominated for the Breeders Crown UK & Ireland and Sire Stakes Ireland.

Breeders Crown UK & Ireland are delight to have Rock N Roll Heaven nominated for the Breeders Crown UK & Ireland 2017 series.

Frozen semen from Rock N Roll Heaven will be available in UK and Ireland for 2017 through Oakwood Stud.
This has not been an easy task by any means as this stallion is in great demand in both the USA and Australia. Stud fees in USA and Australia have an inbuilt amount in order for the progeny to race in their extremely rich series, which is not the case in UK or Ireland, but who know what the future will hold.

Oakwood Stud are not doing this for any monetary gain, but are devoted to the furtherance of the Standardbred in Ireland and the UK, as is the Breeders Crown UK & Ireland. The future is looking good and this is a step in the right direction for breeding standardbreds in the UK and Ireland.
Thanks to Oakwood Stud for making this happen.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO OF BREEDERS CROWN UK & IRELAND

There isn’t a cut and dry recipe for having a successful race meeting, but the 10th Anniversary Breeders Crown UK & Ireland certainly had all the ingredients – Good racing, good prize money, enthusiastic owners, trainers, drivers, commentators and management and a great atmosphere.

With an appreciative crowd of supporters and visitors from around the world everyone pulled their weight and all got stuck in to produce what was probably the most memorable night the Breeders Crown has witnessed in its 10 years existence. Miraculous going in 1.56.9 on a night that didn’t favour track records being broken was phenomenal with the second horse Ayr Trooper going sub 2 minutes in 1.59.6 which under normal circumstances would have been good enough to win this 3 year old stakes race. Every race had something to offer, as recorded by my eloquent colleagues Darren Owen, Eric Witherspoon and Steve Wolf.

Thanks for the great write ups.

The video for all these races will be available to view soon, so keep check here for updates.

The Breeders Crown & Ireland Stakes 10th Anniversary

The first series took place in 2007 and since then the Breeders Crown UK & Ireland has been around the whole of the UK taking in England, Scotland, North Wales and South Wales gathering momentum along the way, bring it to where it is now. This prestigious event is set to have paid out over £270,000 in prize money and prizes in the 10 years it has been going, making it the richest series ever in the history of the sport in both the UK and Ireland for home bred horses. These horses are showing very favourable against the majority of imported stock.

This being the 10th Anniversary, things are looking extremely good with a good few entrants having won previously and others waiting in the wings to perhaps topple them from their throne.

There are 3 added attractions on the card this year, The All American 2 Year Old Fillies Race, The Ephie Mather Memorial Trot, and last but not least, the young talented Dexter Dunn from New Zealand, one of the top drivers in the world is visiting us and has picked up a few catch drives in most of the divisions. In all, I visualise a top night’s entertainment for everyone.

The Breeders Crown UK & Ireland would like to take the opportunity to thank all sponsors & competitors for their loyal support.

Dexter Dunn returning to drive in UK & Ireland

World champion harness racing driver Dexter Dunn has confirmed that he will be coming to drive in Wales, UK for the Breeders Crown UK & Ireland on August 2 at Tir Prince and to return to the Vincent Delaney Memorial Weekend at Portmarnock Raceway in Dublin, Ireland August 13 and 14.

Dunn, the reigning World Champion driver from New Zealand, took Ireland by storm last year and now is setting his sights on the Breeders Crown UK & Ireland at Tir Prince.

“When Derek Delaney contacted me about coming back this summer to Ireland and if I was interested in also including the Breeders Crown in Wales, Dunn said, “It fit in good with my racing calendar and there wasn’t much hesitation in saying yes!”

David Wilson, chairman of the Breeders Crown UK & Ireland that will take place at Tir Prince in Wales, August 2, was ecstatic when he heard the Dexter Dunn was coming..

“This is the tenth anniversary of the BC and what fantastic news to have,” Wilson beamed, “Dexter Dunn showed everyone at Portmarnock last year of his great ability to drive a horse and I am sure his services on Breeders Crown Day will be much in demand from trainers and owners alike.

“Having Dexter coming is fabulous,” Wilson added, “We have the inaugural All American Bred Filly Pace for two-year-olds this year, a bumper crop of horses eligible for the Breeders Crown and purses that could exceed £35,000, harness racing tour groups coming from around the world and now the news that Dexter Dunn will be driving on the program is just great.”

“I had such a blast in Ireland last year,” Dunn said, “It was such a great experience and now I am going to enhance it by driving at Tir Prince on their Breeders Crown program. It will be awesome to get back over and catch up with all the nice people over there that treated me so well last year, and of course, to have a few beverages as well!”

“We are both delighted and honoured to have a world class driver such as Dexter come to Tir Prince to drive,” said Eric Witherspoon, Racing Director at Tir Prince. “I had the pleasure of being at Portmarnock last year and like everyone else who was present I was in awe of his reinsmanship. We cannot wait to see him on the track.

“On 2nd August Breeders Crown night, it is one of the most eagerly anticipated nights of the year,” Witherspoon explained, “when the very best juveniles from Britain and Ireland compete for top prize money, the racing will be top class and Dexter’s attendance will be the cherry on the cake. We also have the Ephie Mather Memorial Trot which is a Free For All Trot For International Trotters.”

Witherspoon noted that Dexter Dunn will also be in attendance on Tuesday 9th August at Tir Prince when the track hosts the 2 mile Free For All Pace that is being sponsored by John Howard.

Track management hopes that the track record for 2 miles will be shattered on this night and with Dunn’s experience in long distance races makes him someone to not bet against him driving the record breaker.

Dunn then returns to Dublin, Ireland for the Vincent Delaney Memorial Weekend the 13th and 14th of August and race committee head, Derek Delaney, see’s Dunn’s return as a major boost to the weekend.

“I have kept in contact with Dexter during the off-season,” Delaney said. “And he was keen to come back for the VDM and to drive at Tir Prince. So much so that he bought in as part of a syndicate on the two-year-old filly, Oakwood’s Dragoness.

“Dexter, along with Cran Delgaty, Clive and Anne Dalton, Mick Harvey, Oakwood Stud, Lee Edwards, Dean Russell, Simon Elvin and Paul Johnson,” Delaney said, “are all in and this filly is eligible to the new American bred pace at Tir Prince. Wouldn’t that be great if Dexter could win that race with her?”

It would seem that Dexter Dunn has his work cut out for him while on holiday this summer in the UK and Ireland.

“It’s not work at all driving horses,” Dunn said, “I hope I have a drive in every race. I love it.”

Will there be some traveling for Dunn this August?

“Yeah, I’m looking to do a bit of tripping around while I am over,” Dunn said. “I haven’t planned what or where yet through. I had such a super time last year.”

Update by CEO & President

“The Breeders Crown UK & Ireland is ten years old in 2016. I have decided it should settle and build on what we have achieved in the past nine years by going to various tracks and attracting breeders, trainers and followers alike. Our series gets better each year and the more it is supported, the greater the prize money becomes.

I have learned much from this exercise, but now we must build and work together on enhancing a breeding and racing program. For this reason I have asked two tracks to tender for the Breeders Crown UK & Ireland Series for a three year period.

The tracks invited are York Harness Raceway and Tir Prince Raceway. There will be some changes made in 2016, always for the betterment of the Breeders Crown UK & Ireland and its supporters.
Thank you, as ever for your support in our past nine years”
David Wilson
CEO and President of The Breeders Crown UK & Ireland.
